Justice and the Digital Record

Study information flows within and between the criminal justice system and commercial sector data brokers.

An ISD Clinic student team is sought for a two-year research project in the public interest focusing on the flow of personal information in criminal justice information systems to private sector data brokers. These data brokers perform employment and tenancy background screening services, thus it is critical that they are easily accessible by individuals, accurate, and corrected when appropriate. The project seeks to map the methods by which private sector companies access this information, the accuracy with which it is recorded, and the process followed in updating and correcting information in both the government-operated and private sector systems. In doing so, the principal investigators intend to explore the legal, economic, and practical effects of delays and inaccuracies in criminal justice information systems (and their counterparts in the private sector), with the goal of increasing efficiency, access to justice, and facilitating employment opportunities for individuals with criminal records. Database design and operation skills are necessary.
